On Friday, April 21, Filippo Camerota’s Una terra oltre le stelle. Il planisfero di Martin Waldseemüller will be launched at 5.00 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Fondazione Biblioteche della Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze (Via Bufalini 6, Florence). The book is the first volume to be part of “Orientamenti”, a series published by Giunti Editore.
Martin Waldseemüller’s map (1507) — the only extant copy of which is kept at the Library of Congress in Washington DC—features the name “America” for the first time in honour of Amerigo Vespucci, who recognized the New World as a land of its own.
The book collects texts and images from the website created by Museo Galileo in collaboration with the Library of Congress and sponsored by Fondazione CR Firenze, plus QR codes linked to films which illustrate the context where the map was made and a number of pertinent subjects.
Filippo Camerota (Scientific Director, Museo Galileo), and Angelo Cattaneo (CNR – Istituto di Storia dell’Europa Mediterranea) will attend the meeting.
