Scientific progress is rooted in a very long journey of learning which is based on the observation of nature and phenomena. In a world where virtual play invades our lives, we would like to reintroduce some simple episodes of observation of the reality around us that closely resemble old fashioned games at the basis of great strides in knowledge. Following the suggestions of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo Galilei, we will observe simple physical phenomena that give us a chance to verify some of the laws they understood.

La Colonna Traiana: il racconto della costruzione di uno dei più noti simboli della Città Eterna
(Trajan's Column: an account of the construction of one of the best-known symbols of the Eternal City)
Trajan's Column is a work of engineering of unprecedented complexity, that well symbolizes the heights reached by Roman civilization in the art of building. With a height of 38.40 meters and a total weight of about 1050 tons, the Column represented a real challenge for its builders. Thanks to a timely study of ancient documents, it is possible to recount all the stages of this undertaking: from the extraction of the marble in the Apuan Alps to the journey of the very heavy blocks to Rome, from the organization of the construction site to the positioning of the Column's rocks one on top of the other.

L’Astrolabio "di Chaucer": indagini su costruzione, uso e vicissitudini di un raro strumento astronomico
("Chaucer's" astrolabe: investigations into the construction, use and vicissitudes of a rare astronomical instrument)
What is a plane astrolabe? What parts does it consist of? What was it used for? In addition to answering these general questions, the meeting will focus on the rebuses that the researcher has to cope with when interrogating a particular astronomical instrument. Case-study: the Tomba-Koelliker plane astrolabe, one of only ten extant astrolabes in the world, that can be traced back to the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer.

(Fra Mauro's digital world map: exploring an extraordinary representation of the world of the mid-15th century)
Made in Venice in the Camaldolese monastery of San Michele in Isola around 1450, the world map, one of the most fascinating cartographic products of that time, represents a bridge between medieval geographical knowledge and the exploration and commercial projects that would lead a few decades later to the discovery of the New World and to the circumnavigation of Africa. Filippo Camerota illustrates the digital edition he edited with Angelo Cattaneo, which is now accessible through a dedicated website that allows detailed multimedia exploration of the work.
