VAST European research project has started in December 2020 as a part of the EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Framework Programme. The Museo Galileo is a partner of VAST together with several important European institutions, headed by the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos (Greece).
VAST—Values Across Space and Time—aims to investigate the transformations of moral values such as freedom, democracy, equality, tolerance, dialogue, human dignity, and the rule of law, which are considered fundamental to construct sustainable communities and a harmonious society.
VAST is the result of an international cooperation between eight Institutions from five different countries: National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos (Greece), Museo Galileo of Florence (Italy), University of Milan (Italy), National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece), Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (Portugal), Fairytale Museum (Ciprus), Semantika (Slovenia) and Athens & Epidaurus Festival (Greece).
“The Museo Galileo is partner to the VAST project as the heir of a European scientific tradition promoted by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany between the 16th and 19th centuries”, Filippo Camerota, Vice Director of the Florentine museum, affirmed. “The fundamental role played by Galileo’s experimental method in the movement of ideas known as Scientific Revolution makes the Museo Galileo a symbolic place of that epoch-making change which completely transformed the image of the world by putting science at the center of the relationship between political power, society and religion.”
