By pointing his telescope towards the sky, Galileo revealed a world that was completely different from the one known up until then and started an adventure that would have expanded the boundaries of our knowledge of the universe. His ideas were spread during the Enlightenment and the telescope became a common object in upper class homes, often exhibited as a symbol of the high cultural and social level of their owners. In 1750 Carlo Goldoni, a careful observer of bourgeois life, in his playful drama The world of the moon, told of a false astrologer who, using a large telescope to show the inhabitants of the moon, contrives a plot in order to arrange some marriages.
The guided tour tells how the evolution of the telescope and its observations have not remained confined to the scientific field, but have also influenced the development of philosophy, intertwining with art, literature, theater and entertainment.
Moreover, within the Florence Light Festival, from 8 December 2019 to 6 January 2020, the facades of the buildings in Piazza dei Giudici will be illuminated by video projections related to the theme of the moon, made by the Museo Galileo in collaboration with the Camera di Commercio in Florence.
The event was made possible thanks to the contribution and with the patronage of the Città Metropolitana di Firenze.
