Museo Galileo celebrates National Braille Day on February 21st through a series of events that have been made possible by the generous support of the Culture and Tourism Department of the Tuscan Region and the collaboration of the Tuscan Braille Printery and the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired.
On this occasion, the new facilities of Museo Galileo for visitors with visual disabilities was kicked off, namely a tactile tour featuring reproductions of scientific instruments, a Braille guide book with tactile images and a guide book for the visually impaired, both in Italian and English.
Moreover, from February 18th to March 5th, 2015, Museo Galileo will display a special exhibition titled Braille Writing Techniques and Instruments, which illustrates the tactile tour ways that the blind can access museums and engage with the works on display. The exhibition also aims to offer sighted visitors the opportunity of coming into direct contact with a different form of communication code.
The exhibition displays Braille writing instruments and early-20th-century tactile books bearing witness to the activity of Braille Printery in Florence, as well as the image moulds used for the Braille guide book of the Museo Galileo.
On Saturday, February 21, at 3:30 pm, a special museum visit for the blind guided by Andrea Gori, coordinator of Museo Galileo’s educational activities, is scheduled.
