The City of the Uffizi

This exhibition – which was produced for the 4th centenary of the foundation of the Uffizi Gallery – highlights the extraordinary variety and abundance of the collections of Florence museums.
The Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza organised the exhibition part devoted to “Science in the Gallery” to emphasize the close relations between the institutions. As a matter of fact, naturalistic and scientific collections were housed together with artworks in the Uffizi Gallery until the second half of the 18th century, when Medicean and Lorraine collections of scientific instruments were moved to the Imperiale e Regio Museo di Fisica e Storia Naturale, a predecessor of the Museo di Storia della Scienza. Most of the instruments on display come from the museum’s depository. Rare manuscripts illustrate their construction and function.
