Glasses to See offers a cross-section of the history of eyeglasses – objects which exerted a strong influence on modern and contemporary society. Over a hundred ancient spectacles from the precious collection of the Carl Zeiss Foundation in Jena are on display for the first time ever. They illustrate the main stages of technical and aesthetic evolution of this optical instrument from the 16th to 19th century. Wonderful engravings by major artists such as Dürer, Rembrandt, Callot, 18th-century caricatures and exquisite Japanese drawings portray the different uses of eyeglasses. The variety of shapes and materials, as well as the refinement in their composition, bear witness to the ability of their makers and highlight the close connection between science and art.
