The exhibition illustrates the multifaceted world of handicraft from historical roots to its role in contemporary economy and culture. The Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza helped in creating two different exhibition routes within the subtheme “Italian Handicrafts through History.” “Handicraft and science” highlights the ability and ingenuity of skilled makers who constructed perfect and beautiful devices. Antique scientific instruments, exquisite Accademia del Cimento’s glassware as well as machines and tools used to made them are significant examples of production by most important Italian “botteghe” (workshops) from the 15th to 19th century. “Two-Wheel Man” is devoted to the history of bicycles, and features foot-powered velocipedes and other antique two-wheel vehicles.
