The digital archive offers a tool for consultation and analysis of the vast botanical repertoire contained in the Mexican treasure, a collective work by the Accademia dei Lincei that began in 1610/11 and was completed only in 1651. Commissioned by Federico Cesi and brought to completion after his death by Francesco Stelluti and Cassiano dal Pozzo, the project also saw the active involvement of Ioannes Schreck, Justus Ryckius, Johann Faber, and Fabio Colonna. The work primarily draws on the illustrative and descriptive material of Francisco Hernández, the physician appointed by Philip II to explore the natural resources of New Spain, through the synthesis provided by Nardo Antonio Recchi. The Mexican treasure is notable for its iconographic apparatus and its ambition to systematize the naturalistic conceptions of the time. The digital archive, entirely focused on the botanical section (Books II-VIII), uses the image as its main unit, separating it from Recchi’s narrative and integrating it with the commentaries by Schreck and Colonna. The platform enables users to explore the images and information on each plant highlighting comparisons with the literature of the time, therapeutic properties, color descriptions, and the roles of the cited figures.
