This activity, aimed at middle school students aged 11 to 13, aims to highlight the connection between the "infinitely large world" and the "infinitely small world," revealed through the use of the telescope and the microscope. Using accounts found in the works of Galileo Galilei, Vincenzo Viviani, Lorenzo Magalotti, and Robert Hooke as a starting point, the goal is to discuss the contexts and values associated with key milestones in human progress in understanding our universe, with particular attention to the freedom of scientific research, free thought, the pursuit of demonstrable truth, progress, cooperation, and equality.
The use of optical microscopes and discussion about technological advancements in microscopy provide opportunities to stimulate students to reflect on contemporary discoveries, their moral implications, and the issue of responsibilities within the scientific community in terms of transparency, dialogue, and collaboration.
