To engage the general public in discussions about values related to the encounter of different cultures and perspectives, as well as the implications associated with scientific progress, it was decided to utilise the medium of theatre. This performance, an original work conceived and written by museum educators specifically for the VAST project, presents an imaginary encounter between two prominent historical figures: Galileo Galilei and Amerigo Vespucci. In the representation, the two characters, despite belonging to different epochs, meet to discuss their revolutionary discoveries that have radically transformed the perception of the known world. The script draws parallels between the new celestial horizons unveiled by the Pisan scientist and the unexplored lands discovered by the Florentine navigator. During the performance, enriched with humorous dialogues and surprising narratives, the audience has the opportunity to immerse themselves in the wonders and challenges faced by both characters in confronting centuries-old traditions and promoting scientific inquiry.
The purpose of the performance is to promote critical thinking, highlighting the transformative power of questioning preconceived ideas, emphasising the importance of exploration driven by curiosity, and recognizing the value of sharing knowledge for societal progress. The activity aims to offer a deeper understanding of the values related to scientific inquiry, presenting a framework of the historical contexts of the Age of Exploration and the Scientific Revolution, and providing the opportunity to actively participate in thoughtful debates on ethical considerations related to exploration, cultural encounters, and responsible use of scientific advancements. The activity is particularly suitable for interpretation from an inclusive perspective, as evidenced during an experimentation conducted in collaboration with the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired.
