Italian Directory of PhD Dissertations of Historical-Scientific Interest
  • Bibliography

A 2022 joint initiative of the Italian Society for the History of Science (SISS) and Museo Galileo, the Italian Directory of PhD Dissertations of Historical-Scientific Interest is the outcome of a census of doctoral theses discussed in Italian universities since the early 1980s and concerning the history of science and medicine, techniques and technology.

The Directory represents a fundamental and continuously updated tool. Indeed, it brings out the main themes, as well as the different historiographical traditions and trends in research on the history of science in Italy over the long term.

The main sources of data retrieval were doctoral courses in the history of science, which have assigned nearly half of the theses reported in the Directory over the years. Dissertations of historical-scientific interest discussed within other doctorates were identified searching in the Opac of the National Central Library of Florence, the STM-Modern History database and the various university databases dedicated to research products. A key contribution was made by reports from SISS members and the group of scholars ‘friends’ of the Galileo Library and Museum. We would like to thank them once again and we will continue to rely on their help to retrieve data on past cycles and to keep the Repertory up-to-date with theses to be discussed in the coming years.

The Directory can be accessed alphabetically by author and in descending chronological order. Where available, there is a link to the tab in the University database that gives access, if not embargoed, to the dissertation text in PDF format.
