This collection consists of around 300 documents concerning Giorgio Roster (1843-1927), a professor of hygiene and man of many interests, one of which was experimental photography.
Especially interesting among the photographs are the photomicrographs, used for studies in cytology, anatomy and entomology, and the telephotographs which, taken with a telephoto lens specially adapted by Roster himself, represent objects at different distances (from 500 to 1,700 meters, and as far as shots of sunspots) and are accompanied by the author’s technical notes.
The handwritten documents include drawings of microscopes and apparatus for photomicrography, graphs, planimetries and notes. The twenty-two notebooks dealing with problems of hygiene and health are unusually interesting.
The Museo Galileo also possesses a small collection of slides and negatives coming from a private collection and the digital reproduction of many Roster photos housed in other Florentine libraries and institutes.
All the materials have been catalogued and are accessible in the digital version.
